Annual fees: is it still worth it?
Count only the benefits you actually use.
Cards and memberships with annual fees often list many benefits. The only ones that count are the ones you'd pay for anyway.
The math
- Write down the annual fee
- List the benefits you used last year, and what you would really have paid for them
- If the real value is less than the fee, ask for a downgrade to a no-fee version or cancel
- Before closing a credit card, consider the effect on your credit (a downgrade can keep the account open)
