When perks cost you more than they save
The point is to save money, not to collect points.
Rewards and loyalty programs are designed to make you spend. Staying in charge of that keeps perks working for you.
Common traps
- Spending more to hit a bonus or free-shipping threshold
- Choosing a pricier store or product for points
- Carrying a card balance while earning rewards
- Paying for memberships out of habit
- Sharing a lot of personal data for small discounts
A good rule
A perk is only a saving if you would have bought the thing anyway, at that price.
